Smartphone Technology of The Future

A friend recently went to a psychics stage show. She was extremely dubious of what the experience would entail so I tried to take her mind off of what was to come by getting an amusing app to entertain her. Ghost Scanner came to mind. An amusing little app that came from the depths of the Android Market. It’s claimed that using all the various sensors of your phone the app can be tuned in to detect the presence of the supernatural. A Ghost Hunting App in other words! Whilst it’s extremely doubtful if this app works whatsoever beyond the amusement factor, it does give some food for thought. Not about the nature of the supernatural, but what else we could actually be doing with our phones. As things are it is very rare for any phone user to make full use of their phones functions.

Beyond the expected phone calls and the occasional stint on Angry Birds it is very unlikely that the average smart phone owner will have any idea of the amazing tricks that his or her phone can get up to. Ghost scanner claims to detect ghosts using the different sensors on our phones. That got me to thinking about the other capabilities that a phone actually has and what ingenious ideas could we use smartphone technology for? GPS is currently used for much more then I could envisage: from location based shopping to assisting augmented reality apps, then there’s frequency detection across the GSM network (I’m ignorant enough to say that I don’t even know what frequencies this is-vhf; uhf?). Of course then there’s connectivity to the internet via 3g which amongst other things opens up a whole world of information that our ancestors never had access to.On my phone there’s even proximity detection to stop the phone turning off during calls, imagine if you could bump up the capabilities on that(imagine a WWII submarine captain using a beefed up proxy sensor on a phone to avoid floating mines!).

And then there’s all the rest: accelerometer, led lights for camera, the camera itself, microphone and possibly some others. That’s a lot of capabilities, creatively perhaps pretending to find the supernatural shouldn’t be the pinnacle of what our phone can do. Smartphone technology has come a long way since the days of monochromatic screens all the power is there but just needs to be harnessed. So creatives youve got some powerful hardware, isn’t it time to actually start using it?

Mobile App Development With the iPhone and Android is Expected to Blow Out the Competition

The demand for mobile developers is high and the recruiting environment for software development professionals has been extremely good. IT teams are in huge demand since they play important roles in achieving client goals. Investment in technology is important for meeting the drastically increasing demand on software professionals.

Hiring managers are searching for mobile app developers more than ever since the demand has quadrupled over the last year as companies are willing to boost their spending on IT for meeting their goals. Jobs for software professionals are many but only the competent ones land on them.

The analysis of the best platform has been debatable but going on in the US. According to a report, the shortage of mobile app developers has affected several companies. The shrinking number of professionals is mostly due to the fact that they are inexperienced and the second part is that they are confused about the mobile app platform that they should specialize in. Software development professionals are also very much concerned about the reducing remuneration though mobile developers are always in demand.

Talking about the features of the iPhone, the UI is exceptional and the software is seamless. There are several iPhone versions with one released every year. The storage capacity varies for every model and the rate differs likewise.

Android on the other hand is one of the consistent performers in the mobile app world and there are many incredible smartphones which run on this platform. Android owners have different carriers and referred to, as Droids. The phones are of different configurations, memory and sizes.

Apps constitute the most important part of both platforms and are cited as the primary reason why many people opt for smartphones. Apple’s App Store has a huge store of apps and games and also is the biggest market of apps in the world with the Android OS closely vying for the top spot. Apple is relatively strict in the apps that pass through its scanner.

Alternatively, Android emphasizes on “openness” and encourages more and more apps for its own app market which results in diminished quality of the apps. The iOS boasts of good quality apps compared to Android market and both the stores have their own share of hits and misses.

A unique advantage with Android is related to Google’s huge list of services which are assimilated in the smartphone easily. The native Gmail app. Google Maps feature and the Google Navigation features are great enough. One can tweak some phone features if necessary. The smartphones boast of slick design and theme apps for a consistent look and feel of the apps.

But with multiple versions of Android available, there is a consistent problem of fragmentation with the operating system. Additionally, many phone manufacturers opt to have their own mobile “skins” which find a place on top of the Android platform. Only Galaxy Nexus offers a vanilla Android experience and hence the first phone to be updated with the newest OS.

Thus, the iPhone is less customizable than Android but rules in terms of speed and great user interface.

Best Gadgets to Take on a Spring Break

A Spring break goes very well with plenty of gadgets in the luggage. Travelers often prefer compactness, lightness and superior function in their gadgets. Innovative features, like a camera with a GPS device that “remembers” where you were when you took the picture. Here are some recommendations to make your adventures more fun and memorable.

High Definition Camcorders: If you’re thinking about buying a new camcorder you might as well go high definition or at least wide screen. You can get camcorders that record to good old tape, DVDs, flash memory, or hard drives. If you’re planning on doing serious video editing, tape may still be the way to go since applications like Premiere and Final Cut have been slow to embrace AVCHD the replacement format to miniDV.

Digital Cameras: If you’re still carrying around that 1 MP camera or you just never made the switch to digital there are some good values in digital cameras. If you want a professional SLR camera Retrevo recommends the Nikon D300 as the best overall value in digital cameras. It’s a 12 MP SLR that gets very high expert ratings and great user reviews. The Canon Powershot A560 can be purchased for around $130. It’s a 7.1 MP compact camera with a 4x optical zoom and face technology but no image stabilization. A step up from the Powershot A560 would be the Nikon Coolpix 5100.

Very Cool Helmet Camera: In case you want to capture the action from a closer point of view, you should consider this helmet mounted camera that stores video to memory. It’s weather proof and ruggedized so you can use it in the snow or rain. It’s an impressive piece of engineering and sells for around $325.

GPS: You don’t have to live in Colorado to use Garmin’s new handheld GPS . The Colorado 300 is a handheld unit with a color display and lots of extra travel-friendly features like an MP3 player and book reader. Garmin announced new products at CES including the Garmin nuvi 260 and the Garmin nuvi 850 but last years models like the Garmin nuvi 360 or the Mio C520 can offer some very good values at prices under $300.

Universal Chargers: There are many products you can buy to charge your gadgets. We like the Solio hybrid solar chargers that have a built-in storage cell that can be recharged from the wall or the sun and then makes that power available to many different devices. The Solio Portable Hybrid Solar Charger and the new Solio Hybrid 1000 can both be purchased for under $100. Lenmar sells a universal power pack the PPU1700W that can recharge devices like iPods through a USB connector. It’s great for keeping an iPod going for an entire long plane ride.

iPod Boom Box: There’s a good chance most travelers will be carrying an iPod or other MP3 player wherever they go. To get a party going wherever you may be, an iPod Boom Box might be a good idea. The Griffin Technology Journi is a good candidate. You can buy it for under $100. It has a rechargeable battery that lasts for 8 – 10 hours on a charge it can also be powered by a USB port and gets good user reviews. Altec Lansing has the inMotion iM600 for around $100. It gets very good user reviews, uses some engineering tricks to make the speakers seem further apart, and even has an FM radio built in.

Book Readers: Two popular readers using electronic paper are Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader. The Sony Reader PRS 505 can be purchased for around $300. The Kindle which includes high speed 3G internet access for downloading books and browsing the web sells for $399. The Kindle has received mixed reviews due to some ergonomic issues but gets many rave reviews as a groundbreaking product.
